Tomb Raider Level Manager Set up Instructions

By Paolone

On this page you will find installation instructions to set up the Tomb Raider Level Manager and the Tomb Raider Level Editor. These two programs work together to allow you to easily play custom levels.

Important Note

If you already have an older version of the Level Manager installed (above version 1.3) you should choose same installation folder as your current version and ignore all the following steps in these instructions.

These steps are only necessary when you install the Tr Level Manager for the first time your computer.

Please note that steps 1 through 7 are ONLY executed during your initial installation and setup of the TR Level Manager. These are instructions you only perform once.

1. Prepare Tomb Raider Level Editor

It's better if you install and prepare the Tomb Raider Level Editor before launching the first execution of the Tr Level Manager.

There are two possible situations:

  • You already have the Tomb Raider Level Editor installed; however in this case you must be sure that your configuration of the Tomb Raider Level Editor is in its original installed state. If you have played custom levels, your configuration is not original and you must re-install the Tomb Raider Level Editor before launching the TR Level Manager.

  • You do not have the Tomb Raider Level Editor installed, in which case you should download and install it before launching the TR Level Manager. The Tomb Raider Level Editor can be downloaded from the Tools page.

  • Please note that your fresh install of the TRLE should be updated with the Revised WADs and the XP fast loading patch (XP Patched TRLE exe), both of which are available from our Editor Resources page.

2. Install Tr Level Manager

To install the TR Level Manager setup files:

Download the TR Level Manager V1.4 from the Editor Tools Page

Unzip the file and install the Level Manager.

3. The First Time you Install the TR Level Manager

When you first start the programme, the first step is to locate where on your hard drive your Tomb Raider Level Editor program is installed.

If you had already installed the Tomb Raider Level Editor (TRLE) you should see in green row at the bottom of the current window the full path to your TRLE folder. If this green row is empty you should click on the button Browse to find/change folder and choose the TRLE folder where you installed the TRLE.

When you have selected the correct folder, you can click on Ok.

4. Is your TRLE configuration original?

By original configuration we mean that all the files in your TRLE folder are the original files. If you played custom levels, the configuration is not original. Please do not skip this step. If your configuration is not original, you will experience gaming problems. The TR Level Manager must have the original files to work with.

If your files are not original, please click the No button, exit the TR Level Manager program, re-install the Tomb Raider Level Editor with the original files and then re-start the Level Manager.

If your files are original you can click the Yes button and go to next step...

5. Which kind of backup?

An internal backup will be performed only once and this is an essential operation so that the Level Manager can handle level swapping.

It's adivsable to choose FULL backup and so select the Yes button.

However, if you have very little free space on your hard drive, you could choose compact backup (No button) and swapping levels will work well enough, but you may experience problems with sounds (wav files) being different from those included with each download. It is highly recommended, therefore, that you choose a full backup.

6. Create or load archive?

If the Level Manager doesn't find an old .prf file in installation folder, it will ask you to create a new archive or load an old archive. If you have no previous archives of custom levels, choose Create New Archive.

However if you have an older version of level manager installed and you wish use the old archives associated with it, you can choose Load Archive and select the .trl file(s) in your older Level Manager folder.

7. Choose Folder for New Archive

If in step 6 you chose Create New Archive, the TR Level Manager will ask you to choose the main folder where you will save your zipped custom levels.

Theorically you could change the default folder and create new folders, but it's recommended that you accept the default folder the Level Manager proposes.

8. Choose settings for Tomb Raider Level Editor

When you first execute the Tomb Raider Level Editor program by clicking on the Play button in level manager, you are going to see the Settings dialogue box for the the TRLE. This is where you should choose the graphical and audio settings you prefer.

In this window it is better to change only the options enclosed within the red frame (in above image). This is because the other settings have been established automatically and are usually the best options.

Remarks

It is not always adivsable to choose output resolutions above 800 x 600.

Some custom levels require Volumetric FX to be switched off (in the case of distance fog) while others require Volumetric FX to be switched on. Always check the readme!

These TRLE settings can be changed at any time once the TR Level Manager has been installed and setup properly:
Level-Editor->Change graphical and audio settings of Level Editor

It's not advisable to install custom levels without first having chosen the settings for the Level Editor.
