Story
A remake of the original level with some changes in the
gameplay.
Palace Midas 2
Palace Midas 2 is a brilliant level, a little gem
that has been somewhat overlooked. I can't think why.
Gameplay is fairly linear, but solid and absorbing: it never
feels as if you’re lost with nothing to do. The level boasts
a great variety of superbly-executed puzzles – some of the
door-and-switch tasks are truly ingenious. The puzzles are
occasionally tricky, but not unfairly so, and they can be
solved by common sense and observation rather than dumb luck
or frustrating trial-and-error. I noticed this aspect of the
level quite early on, and really appreciated it – we need
more common-sense puzzles out there!
There aren’t many traps to worry about, but Lara is kept on
her toes by an array of enemies (mainly skeletons and
crocodiles) which are used frequently but strategically.
The setting is credible and captivating throughout, with
top-notch architecture, texturing and lighting. The flyby
sequences are helpful and wonderfully done, accompanied by
well-chosen music. In fact, all the music (though not
customized) is perfectly fitting, and really enhances the
playing experience.
The difficulty is nicely balanced: the level is neither a
walk in the park, nor staggeringly hard. Overall it’s a bit
short, but this makes it the ideal choice if you’re looking
for a break from epic levelsets, and with a download size of
just over 2MB you can't go wrong. Highly recommended!
