The Outpost and Alarm

Alarm is perhaps the most important aspect of war mode and when understood and used properly greatly enhances your skill as a player and protects your vassals. Alarm does not protect your gold, your weapons or vassals from being rescued, it only protects your own vassals from being seized. If you only have 3 attackers and your alarm is more than your TAS, then in most cases no one could seize a vassal from you. One exception would be a highly churched attack, but that would be rare as most players wouldn't wish to risk losing so much 'church' on a seize that could perhaps fail because alarm is so high, and someone with plenty of Freemen who knows how to break down defences with high alarm. Unfortunately, Knighthood is rife with expert players with cloned accounts who prey on new players and pass the proceeds to their main accounts which makes things difficult for new players. Hopefully the Devs will fix this problem.

There are basically three types of alarm and alarm is displayed on your main page as indicated below.

You can also see instantly from the main attack screen the alarm of each opponent in your Attack Bracket. It is the reading below the shield.

Each time you attack someone, you put their alarm up and their new alarm is included in the screen that appears after each attack. Alarm readings now include mobilisation alarm as a separate reading beside their main alarm.

Before handling the Outpost let's deal with basic attack alarm, of which there are two types. When you attack someone their alarm will rise 1 point for each attack, whether you are raiding, looting or attempting a seize. This is known as mobilisation alarm. This alarm is not stable and when you call off your attack, this alarm will decay extremely quickly, at a rate of about 1 alarm per minute. This alarm cannot be relied on to protect you because it decays so quickly.

When a vassal is seized your alarm will jump by twice the value of the seized vassal. If someone for example seizes a power 20 Knight from you, your alarm will jump by 40 points. This alarm is stable and will remain stable for 24 hrs. This alarm can be relied on to protect you.

When you attack or rescue, your alarm is reset to 0 so if you have a high alarm think twice about resetting it if you're not going to be around for a while.

The Outpost

Your Outpost will become one of your favourite buildings once you understand how it works. When you have finished a seizing session and man your outpost, your alarm will start to rise whether you are attacked or not. This alarm is stable and will rise for 24 hrs and then decay at the same speed over another 24 hrs. The bigger and better your outpost and the higher the power of vassals with which you man it will affect how quickly your Outpost alarm will rise.

Outpost alarm can be used to protect you when you're not around your PC. If I'm not going to be around tomorrow, I will staff my Outpost with good vassal around 2 pm or 3 pm. I can then keep an eye on my kingdom through the afternoon and early evening as my alarm rises. Tomorrow I can get on with life without having to worry about vassals being stolen as my alarm will be very high and very stable and I will be able to reset my alarm when I get home. This won't help to protect seized vassals from rescues but it will keep your own vassals protected.

If you spend time at your desk each day, you can have a seizing session first thing in the morning, man your Outpost at tea break, keep an eye on things through the rest of the morning and afternoon and your alarm should be sufficiently high by the end of the day to safely leave your desk without having to worry unduly about your kingdom.

Mobilisation or Attack alarm doesn't affect outpost alarm or vice versa. Say for example your outpost alarm has risen to 40 and then you're attacked and your alarm rises quickly to 60. When the attack is over, assuming they didn't seize anyone, your alarm will quickly decay down to your outpost alarm of 40 and then start rising again.

Alarm Boosts

With only 3 attackers and if your alarm is over your TAS, in general no one should be able to seize a vassal from you at this level of play. If you have for example all 20s in your line-up and you're a Knight with power 59 or lower, your TAS is 60 so if your alarm is 80 or over, no one should be able to seize a vassal from you unless they are using a fully churched attack with freemen. To get a vassal you have to attack with a stronger attack force than their alarm plus twice the value of the vassal. If alarm is 80, to seize a vassal you would need to attack with a force of at least 120. If someone has two Raiders and a Man at Arms, their attack strength would be 125 and they could seize from you, but there shouldn't be expert players using Freemen down among the Knights and Ladies. Obviously at higher levels of play you will require much higher alarm to protect you.

A quick way to get your alarm up is to make friends in your AB who you can play with and when you're finished for the day one of them seizes a power 20 vassal from you and immediately releases it. That will give you an alarm boost of 40. You will then have 3 days to reclaim this vassal. You MUST reclaim vassals on timers before the timers run down or you will lose them if they are inactive.

To set up an alarm boost, put your vassal in an unprotected part of your defences and let your friend know which defence to seize from and when. Make sure your friend is online and ready before setting up an alarm boost.

Don't immediately reclaim your vassal or you lose that alarm. This seize alarm will only protect you until you reclaim the vassal when you would lose the alarm generated.

If you get an alarm boost twice, you will have an alarm of 80. With a TAS of 60 and a few vassals in your Outpost it won't be long before no one will be able to seize from you and every time they attack your mobilisation alarm will rise by 1 and your outpost will keep raising your alarm as well, effectively keeping you safe. You will be able to reclaim both vassals the next time you play. Seized vassals have a 3 day timer so ensure you reclaim them before the 3 days are up or you will lose them.
