Story
These two levels form the first
part of a set of four, a mini-series loosely based on motifs of
the Lovecraft story “At the Mountains of Madness”. These motifs
will become more apparent in the second part (levels 3 & 4), in
which (among other things) you’ll have to explore a ship and
shotgun a Shoggoth.
In these first two levels, however, your objective is to find
your way through a derelict base camp taken over by mercenaries
and collect two artifacts (Seals of the Old Ones) along the way.
Hints for Gameplay
Gameplay is non-linear. When you start the game you find
yourself in a large outside area centred around a deep chasm.
You may start on top, in the middle or at the bottom of it. Each
approach has its own (dis-)advantages, but no area is optional.
There are nine (9) secrets.
Note: There is a
possible bug in that you can shoot barrels that cause a big explosion
before you are supposed to. If you shoot through an ice wall and see a big yellow
explosion and get frightened out of your
wits by dramatic music and you've not got both
'Seals of the Old Ones', reload and carry on or
you'll find a few hours later that you won't be able to finish the game.
Lost Mountains of Heroic Madness
This is a base level set at night
in an icy wilderness. It didn't take me long to become absorbed
with the story and totally immersed in the environment. I really must learn to
start playing custom levels first thing in the morning rather
than late in the evening. When I fired up this thing it was
after 10 pm. Next thing I knew it was 4.30 in the morning. I
couldn't leave it. And the more I played it, the more I loved
it.
Your first mission is to make up
your mind which way you want to play this mission! You can make
your way over to a base camp, down to a middle level, or go
right down to the very bottom of the chasm.
There was a professionalism about this game that surprised me.
This could have easily slotted into TR3 and passed as a
professional level. The lighting and texturing was excellent and the game
solid and well crafted. There is exploration, puzzling and
plenty of adrenaline filled action with more then enough ammunition and medipaks lying
around to keep the game fun. With a totally non linear gameplay, you're
going to be here for a while so keep your wits about you and
remember where things are.
