Level Report by Ampersand
Story
It was a dark and stormy evening (as evenings inevitably
have to be when shocking, horrible truths are about to be
discovered). Lara Croft sat at her study desk, studying
something. This something stated that someone had once told
someone something of significant importance, which could
probably cause some kind of great astral city or something
to plummet from the heavens onto earth, causing everyone to
mutate horribly. Maybe.
Lara then got very bored and decided to raid a random
ancient Egyptian place.
Notes
NOTE THAT THIS LEVEL USES DISTANCE FOG. PLEASE DISABLE
VOLUMETRIC FX. If you are a Mac user, or the level’s
distance drawing is otherwise buggering up horribly, use the
alternative script provided (rename it to 'Script' first, of
course).
The Unremarkable Egyptian
Pillar
Despite its self-effacing title, The Unremarkable
Egyptian Pillar is a cut above your average Egyptian level.
Don’t be discouraged by the use of old TR4 textures and
objects – the author puts his own spin on them, making a
level that is fresh and inventive, while at the same time
eliciting a strong sense of nostalgia that custom levels
rarely do.
The setting – a huge tomb with (you guessed it) a pillar as
its centrepiece – is well-built and lovingly textured, with
impressive attention to detail. One has the urge to explore
every nook and cranny; a classic TR feeling.
Gameplay is fluid, intelligent and creative: there are
humorously-named puzzle items to find, diverse traps and
obstacles to bypass, and plenty of running, jumping and
climbing in between.
Immersive and entertaining from start to finish, The
Unremarkable Egyptian Pillar is a brilliant level. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a bit of
good old-fashioned Raiding.
